How To Clear Codes On A Car (Easy Guide). In this video tutorial I will show you how to clear codes on a car.
Here is how to do it:
a) Clearing Codes with a Scanner
1. Choose an OBD2 scanner
• The first step is selecting the correct OBD2 scanner. For most users, a basic scanner that reads and clears codes is enough. Advanced models offer more features, such as real-time data feeds or advanced diagnostics.
• Ensure your scanner is compatible with the make and model of your car for accurate results.
• After clearing the codes, if the issue is not resolved, the codes may reappear. Make sure to address the root cause before clearing the codes.
2. Turn on the Vehicle
• Find the OBD2 port under your dashboard, typically located near the driver's side.
• Connect the scanner to this port.
• Turn on the ignition without starting the engine to activate the scanner and enable communication with your vehicle’s computer system.
3. Read and Clear the Codes
• Access the “Diagnostic” menu on your scanner.
• Select “Read Codes” to view any issues.
• After addressing the issues, select “Clear Codes” from the menu.
• Confirm the action to erase the codes from your vehicle’s system.
b) Clearing Codes without a Scanner
1. Disconnect the Battery
• Place your vehicle on a flat area and lift the hood.
• Disconnect the battery by removing the negative and positive cables from the battery using a wrench and keep them apart.
2. Discharge the Engine Control Unit (ECU):
• Wait for 15-30 minutes after disconnecting the battery to allow any residual power to dissipate from the ECU.
3. Reconnect the Battery:
• Reattach the positive cable first, then the negative cable. Ensure they are securely clamped.
• Start your engine and check if any warning lights remain. The check engine light should go off as the engine warms up.
• In some modern vehicles, the ECU may retain memory even after the battery is disconnected, so this method may not always clear codes. If the issue persists, a professional scan tool or technician may be needed.
