In 2018, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) published its ‘Female Offender Strategy’, which set out three strategic priorities including, fewer women in custody.
Most recent figures, obtained through an FOI request, show that the overall number of females in prison has fallen from 3,958 in February 2017, to 3,171 in December 2022.
However, the MoJ itself now predicts that there will be an increase in the female population by more than a third in the next three years.
The announcement has led to many charities questioning whether the criminal justice system (CJS) is really working for females.
