Cooling off in a pothole filled by water from a burst pipe, I love that these black birds, accustomed to people walking past, didn't see me as a threat.
Caribbean Grackle
Quiscalus lugubris
Distinctive Features:
Males exhibit a glossy black plumage.
Females display a dark grayish-brown coloration.
Both genders possess striking white eyes.
Similar to other grackle species, the Caribbean Grackle is audacious and can quickly become accustomed to human presence. It's not unusual to spot these birds in close proximity to people, eagerly seeking out leftover food and even pilfering unattended items! Particularly prevalent in coastal cities like Barbados, they thrive near human settlements.
Highly sociable, Caribbean Grackles seldom travel alone. They engage in communal activities such as foraging and roosting in colonies, and I've been dive-bombed many times by black birds that have decided everything within a kilometer of their nests needs their permission to be there.
