Chamberlain Bridge: History and Beauty in Bridgetown, Barbados
In the heart of Bridgetown, Barbados, stands the Chamberlain Bridge, originally built as a swing bridge between 1865 and 1872. Its namesake, Joseph Chamberlain, was the British Secretary of State for the Colonies.
This bridge divides the inner and outer basins of the Careenage, a secure harbor for various boats. During hurricanes or rough seas, some boats relocate from the outer basin to the inner one.
Adjacent to the bridge's west side lies the Bridgetown boardwalk, offering a scenic waterfront stroll.
At the southern end of the bridge stands the Independence Arch, commemorating Barbados' independence from Britain. Nearby, Independence Square park provides a serene spot to watch boats in the careenage. Across the Chamberlain Bridge, the historic Parliament Buildings grace the skyline.
In 2006, the original manual swing bridge was replaced with a modern lift bridge.
