Hello everyone!
In this video, I will show one of the ways to create a block of slotted pockets for bank cards. In my opinion, this technology is more understandable, more accurate and simpler than using a satin ribbon. Using the principle and changing the dimensions of the templates, this method can be used in many products, not only wallets.
The materials required are leather, preferably of medium or high density, and the thinnest cardboard you can find, or materials of similar density. In my case, cardboard with a thickness of 0.4 mm is used. The thickness of the leather depends on the product, for wallets it can be 1.2 - 1.6 mm thick.
I record a video about making a block of three pockets for a bifold. But in this way it is quite easy to make a block for any number of pockets, you just need more materials and time.
I start the work by marking the details according to the templates. With an awl, I transfer the contours of the templates and the adjacent markings to the skin. For cardboard, it is better to use a ballpoint pen. After cutting, we get one leather part and three from skin cardboard. The leather part acts as a frame. It needs to make slots for bank cards. This can be done on the side marking. In order for the cards to be more easily inserted into the pocket, first, I make holes with a diameter of 3 mm at the edges of the slot, and then I connect them with a knife.
I also make slits on some parts made of cardboard, they will serve to connect the parts to each other.
The next step is to mark the back side of all the parts with a ballpoint pen according to the template for their correct positioning.
Applying a decorative line to the leather part (running shoes) is an optional step. This is solely at the discretion of the master. For jogging, I use an electric curler with a 1.5 mm nozzle.
To make it easier to insert the cards into the pocket, I chamfer the inside of the pocket slot with a 0.6 mm edge cutter. The thicker the leather, the larger the edger can be used.
Now, when all the parts are prepared, you can start assembly. To do this, we glue the parts from the leather cardboard on the back side of the leather part according to the marking. We start this operation from the bottom part. We glue the part one by one and sew it. I roll the seam with a metal roller so that the protruding threads do not interfere with inserting the card. In my opinion, firmware is not required. It has a more decorative character. If all the parts are well glued, then after assembling the finished product, it is unlikely that the card will tear the place of gluing.
When the entire structure is assembled, all that remains is to connect the cardboard parts together. For convenience, we start connecting from the upper part to the lower one. We simply take the wedge of the upper part and insert it into the slot of the lower one.
As a result, we get a reliable structure for placing bank cards. All cards will be at the same level relative to the slot and without distortion. I don't really like working with fabrics, so for me personally, this method has certain advantages over using satin ribbon in similar products.
