https://rebekahbrown.com/khali-sweene... (Detroit, Michigan) Journalist Rebekah Brown goes back to Detroit to check out the Downtown Detroit Boxing Gym. This after-school program for children is a model being adopted by cities around the world.
Founded by Khali Sweeney, the focus is on caring for and supporting the children first. Kids get after school food, homework help and then, they work out for their health. If they want to box, they can, but it's not a boxing gym or boxing school.
On this day there were no boxers in the gym because the next day there was a Silver Gloves competition.
The 156 children who come to the program:
—Receive food
—Help with homework
—Mentors
—Physical activity
—Safe place to hang out
It wasn’t a typical boxing gym because the focus is caring for the kids. But Brown highlights achievements of the young boxers under the tutelage of Khali Sweeney.
Brown has been a journalist since ’84, an advertising agency veteran since ’96, and a website & SEO expert since '04. In 2017, Brown celebrated 30 years of boxing writing. For more information, 248-302-5172.
