Rachel Rambles - Black Friday/Cyber Monday is coming up... We don't need more gadgets.
More rambley times. Basically, I spend time teaching my students about ethics in software design and investigating trends in how we design and monetize software these days, but since we're getting close to Thanksgiving and the big sale season I just wanted to highlight that... we don't need new stuff. And, to mention how good software design can help us to not need to upgrade our hardware so often. Maybe I'll talk about this more in depth another time.
In the U.S., we have been raised and conditioned to believe that we stand alone, siloed off from the rest of the people in our community, our state, our country, or the rest of the world, but that's not true. What we do matters, and playing into the targeted ads, buying things we don't need, that's what this country wants us to do - to make them money, and to spend our money (to also make them money). And, in order to create this ludicrous profit, it's not enough to simply sell us things, but they need to exploit laborers and resources from all around the world. So why should we play their game?
