We stock our ponds with catfish instead of pike because the catfish won't reproduce in our artificial pond, allowing us to control their numbers. The pike, however, will reproduce, fill the pond, and kill all the fish.
Catfish are more undemanding, don't require oxygen, and are less likely to die. They are one of the largest freshwater predators. They are ideal predators; they hibernate during the winter and don't bother the fish, allowing them to overwinter peacefully.
Catfish don't usually injure fish, but pike can. Large fish may not fit into a pike's mouth. The pike will injure the fish, causing the fish to become ill and potentially infecting other fish. However, it's important to catch the catfish after two or three years, when it has matured, to prevent it from eating the larger fish in your pond. After all, the larger fish belong to the human.
