Since Excel's calculation engine upgrade a few years ago, many new functions have made our lives easier.

One of those is LAMBDA, which officially made Excel Turing-complete — passing the ultimate litmus test of a fully-fledged programming language.

Now, if Excel doesn't possess a function for a particular purpose, we can build a custom one with its own arguments — previously only possible with VBA.

The initial effort put into constructing a long, windy formula only has to be done once. Then we can use it repeatedly under its assigned name, just like any native function.

In the first of a seven-part series, Microsoft MVP Cristiano Galvão demonstrates how to build a HYPOTENUSE function, which returns the length of a right-angled triangle's longest side.

In the next episode, Cristiano will introduce you to the Advanced Formula Environment, the inevitable successor to the long-standing formula bar!
