May 20, 2023 lifting and removing of the 1961 Engle Road bridge over I-40 in Midwest City, Oklahoma. The move took less than 90 minutes once the Self Propelled Modular Transporter (SPMT) had lifted up the span and contractors cut the last supporting piers.
The bridge, abandoned since 2005, is being removed as part of a project to widen Interstate 40 east of Del City, Oklahoma, and modernize the junction with South Douglas Blvd. The project will affect a total of 9 bridges, many of similar age and construction.
The bridge was constructed as a load bearing slab bridge. This allowed it have a lower profile than a traditional deck on girder design, which was required by its proiximity to the runway protection zones of Tinker Air Force Base.
Thanks to ODOT communications team for answering my questions.
