Yes, Medicare does cover mammograms. Here’s how it works:

Screening Mammograms: Medicare Part B covers a screening mammogram once every 12 months for women aged 40 and older. The screening is covered at 100%, meaning there is no out-of-pocket cost for the patient, as long as the provider accepts Medicare assignment.

Diagnostic Mammograms: If a doctor determines that a diagnostic mammogram is needed (for example, if a screening mammogram reveals something that needs further examination), Medicare Part B will also cover this. However, unlike screening mammograms, diagnostic mammograms may require the patient to pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount, and the Part B deductible applies.

These mammograms are important preventive services, and Medicare encourages beneficiaries to use them regularly for early detection of breast cancer.
