The left hand opens up so many opportunities on the piano as you can play basslines, chords and melodies. However, many students are scared of developing it because it is seen as being their "weaker" hand.
In lesson 2 of my beginner piano lessons course I am going to introduce you to the left hand, give you an exercise to work on that will start to develop strength in your left hand and you are even going to learn how to play a short piece of music with just your left hand!!
The piece in lesson 2 is a simple piano piece for just the left hand using the notes C, B, A and G in the key of C major. It only uses half notes and quarter notes (minims and crotchets). The left hand doesn't need to move out of position - the thumb always stays on middle C throughout the piece. Students are encouraged to stay relaxed as they play the notes - there is often a tendency to stiffen up the left hand with tension. They are also introduced to the correct left hand fingering (1 = thumb and 5 = little finger).
Once again, a backing track is provided so that students are challenged to play the piano in time with a beat.
