This video is a 3D visualization of galaxies observed with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) instrument for the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey, or JADES. This visualization includes 9,500 galaxies from a portion of the JADES image that covers the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) South field—a field observed extensively by the Hubble Space Telescope, Spitzer Space Telescope, Chandra X-ray Observatory, and other observatories.
At the beginning of this video, we fly by galaxies in the nearby universe where galaxies appear larger and more defined in structure. As we pass them, we see more distant galaxies, which appear more distorted and smaller in size. The video ends on the galaxy JADES-GS-z14-0. This galaxy has a redshift of 14.32, making it the current record-holder for the most distant known galaxy. This corresponds to a time less than 300 million years after the big bang.
