SUPER TIP: Finding a short circuit in a motherboard component
A practical way to find a shorted component on a motherboard.
The tip is to inject current into the line that shows the short to find the component heating up. Never inject more voltage than the line can handle.
We already knew the short was on the processor line because the EATX connector showed a short between 12V and GND.
A heating MOSFET was located. After replacement, the board started working again.
The same technique can be used to identify a short on any shorted line.
Always start with low current and low voltage and gradually increase them.
