For a liver biopsy, you are laid flat on your stomach, and then local anesthesia is applied to the skin over your liver. After that, the surgeon inserts a thin needle through your skin towards the liver. The needle is guided to the liver accurately with the help of a CT scan, so the movement of the needle inside the body can be monitored. Then, the surgeon takes a tissue sample from the part of the liver that needs to be examined, using the needle, and withdraws the needle out, and then the sample is sent to the laboratory for a check-up.
