Everything You Need To Know About The Black Frieza Arc
Three years after being teased, Black Frieza’s return to Dragon Ball Super now appears closer than ever based on the series’ latest volume release. Dragon Ball Super Volume 24 completes the current manga collection while hinting at bigger things for the future.
Dragon Ball Super Volume 24 will be released in Japan on April 4, 2025. With the latest volume only a few days away, new photos of the printed collection are being shared online. Initially, the cover art of Ultra Instinct Goku, Ultra Ego Vegeta, Beast Gohan, Orange Piccolo and the Legendary Super Saiyan Broly was revealed in early March, suggesting these heroes will be the new main characters for future stories. Now, the back cover of Volume 24 has been released, and it answers an important question about what sort of monumental threat would require assembling heroes as strong and heroic as these. The answer, of course, is Black Frieza.
Black Frieza Finally Returns to Toyotarou's Dragon Ball Super in New Volume Cover Artwork
Toyotarou, the Dragon Ball Super manga artist and presumed future writer of the series, is responsible for the cover and back art of Volume 24. As previously noted, the visually impressive cover art is a significant departure from the art style of Akira Toriyama, who passed away in March 2024. It evokes fond memories of the promotional artwork produced for Dragon Ball Z during its most dramatic era, such as the lineup of Super Saiyan warriors that featured Goku, Gohan and Future Trunks from the "Cell Saga." Although the new, realistic details on these longtime fan-favorite heroes were off-putting to a few fans, most were ecstatic over Toyotarou’s latest artwork and the possibility of him taking over for his departed sensei -- so much so that even a low-quality screenshot of the volume cover generated massive traffic on social media websites like X
What’s most interesting about the back cover art of Black Frieza is that it’s technically not new and was actually teased last December. The Black Frieza artwork by Toyotarou was used to promote Jump Festa 2025, which took place in Tokyo on Dec. 21-22, 2024. The difference between the two visuals is that the Jump Festa art showed Black Frieza from his head to half his body, while the back cover art of Dragon Ball Super Volume 24 shows his complete figure.
Dragon Ball Super Volume 24 collects Chapters 101-104 of the series. The previously released issue was a special one-shot about how Trunks and Goten were inspired to be superheroes like their fictitious idol, Clean God. The return of Dragon Ball Super coincided with the final new episodes of Dragon Ball Daima, which ended on Feb. 28, 2025, one day before the first anniversary of Toriyama’s passing.
