How to make an umbrella | SWR Handwerkskunst
Germany used to be one of the world's leading umbrella manufacturers. However, most manufacturers in this country have lost the battle against cheap imports from the Far East.
One of the few remaining manufacturers of high-quality umbrellas is located in Essen and Herne: Schirm Schüffler. They produce around 2,200 umbrellas every year. And not just for a wealthy clientele.
A good umbrella from them is available from £50. The company uses machines that are sometimes a hundred years old and draws on craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations.
They are also open to new materials: for example, carbon umbrella shafts are now used. When selecting materials, they place great emphasis on quality: whether it's the fabrics they use to sew the umbrella canopies, the shafts or the handles they install. These are often made from select woods.
