Sobs It wasn't on purpose!
I did find out later that blue Pikmin will toss up red/yellow pikmin from water if they're standing by them and are near land.
I did however 1000% leave the surviving yellow Pikmin behind because I was too scared to try and move them back.
Rest well my yellow carrot boys..
