The perfect storm
For some in the telecommunications industry 5G is already old news with 6G sixth-generation technology in rapid development. It is anticipated to offer 10 million devices per km2 connection density (that is,10x that available on 5G) and user experience data rate of 1 gigabit per second.
6G will see an acceleration in machine-to-machine (M2M) communications, virtual and augmented reality, and use of devices using AI and machine learning, unimpeded by restrictive data rates and the increased proliferation of IoT devices, which are expected to exceed 24 billion as early as 2025.
It is forecast that most,if not all, industries will be impacted. This Masterclass will explore how 6G is a game changer, the opportunities it presents as well as the challenges, it presents particularly to existing laws around privacy and data protection.

Your speakers
Dr Ian Oppermann has over 20 years’ experience in the ICT sector and, has led organizations with more than 300 people, delivering products and outcomes that have impacted hundreds of millions of people globally. He has held senior management roles in Europe and Australia as Director for Radio Access Performance at Nokia, Global Head of Sales Partnering (network software) at Nokia Siemens Networks, and then Divisional Chief and Flagship Director at CSIRO. Ian is considered a thought leader in the area of the Digital Economy and is a regular speaker on “Big Data”, broadband enabled services and the impact of technology on society. He has contributed to 6 books and co-authored more than 120 papers which have been cited more than 3500 times. Ian has an MBA from the University of London and a Doctor of Philosophy in Mobile Telecommunications from Sydney University.
Professor Yingjie Jay Guo is the Director of Global Big Data Technologies Centre and Distinguished Professor at University of Technology, Sydney. Jay is an internationally established scientist with 550+ publications including 240+ IEEE journal papers and 26 granted international patents. He is regarded as a world-leading researcher in communications antenna systems including reconfigurable antennas, reflectarrays/transmitarrays, hybrid arrays and leaky wave antennas. He is an innovator with strong and sustained global industrial impact. His most recent research interest includes 5G and 6G antennas, in-band full duplex wireless communications systems, and joint communications and sensing.
Jay is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Engineering (ATSE) and a Fellow of IEEE. He is the recipient of Australia Government Engineering Innovation Award (2012), Australia Engineering Excellence Award (2007) and CSIRO Chairman Medal (2007 and 2012). He was named one of the most influential engineers in Australia in 2014 and 2015, respectively. He served in the College of Experts of the Australian Research Council in 2016-2018. He was named one of the top 250 researchers across all fields in Australia in 2020.
Jay has thirty years of international academic, industrial and CSIRO experience. He served as a Research Director at CSIRO for nine years, and successfully directed Research and Development programs across a number of fields in ICT including wireless and networking, broadband applications, robotics, sensor networks and big data technologies. Prior to joining CSIRO in August 2005, Jay held a number of senior positions in the European mobile communications industry including Siemens, NEC and Fujitsu Europe for eight years, leading the development of 3G and 4G wireless communications systems.
Peter Leonard is a data and technology business lawyer and principal of Data Synergies. Peter was a founding partner of Gilbert + Tobin. He has worked as a legal and commercials adviser to global and Asia Pac data, communications and technology businesses for over thirty years. He consults for G+T. Peter chairs the Australian IoT (Internet of Things) Alliance’s Data Access, Use and Privacy work stream, the Law Society of NSW Privacy and Communications Committee and the Australian Computer Society’s Artificial Intelligence and Ethics Technical Committee. He serves on a number of advisory boards, including the NSW Data Analytics Centre, and a number of boards of directors. He is a former global chair of the International Bar Association's Technology Committee, former global vice-chair of the IBA's Communications Committee, and former director of iappANZ.
