Japan’s Best Car magazine has revealed some new details about the rumoured Toyota Land Cruiser FJ in an article in its latest issue dated 10 June 2025. According to this report, Toyota will unveil the Land Cruiser FJ at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, which will open on 29 October. Seeing a rising demand for brute old-school SUVs with body-on-frame construction and the slowdown in the world’s transition to zero-emission powertrains, Toyota has decided to invest in a new global compact SUV designed for young and aspiring 4×4 customers. Based on the IMV 0 ladder-frame chassis and expected to measure 4,410 mm in length, 1,855 mm in width, and 1,870 mm in height, this model will be an off-road-oriented alternative to the Corolla Cross. With a wheelbase of 2,580 mm, the Land Cruiser FJ is unlikely to be as spacious as the Corolla Cross (2,640 mm). However, it will be far superior in off-roading, boasting a maximum wading depth of 700 mm and approach, breakover, and departure angles of 33º, 26º, and 23º, respectively. On the design front, the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ is expected to borrow cues from the Toyota Compact Cruiser EV concept and the Toyota Land Cruiser 250 (Toyota Land Cruiser Prado). If Toyota indeed uses “FJ” in the name of the 500D, one certain thing is that it would have a love-it-or-hate-it thick C-pillar resembling the FJ Cruiser. In Japan and other Asian markets, Toyota may offer the Land Cruiser FJ with 2TR-FE 2.7-litre petrol and 1GD-FTV 2.8-litre diesel engine options. 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic could be the transmission choices. A full-time 4WD system with a 40:60 front-rear torque split could be available in the upper-end grades. A centre-locking differential and a Torsen limited-split differential at the rear are also expected to help enhance traction and stability in off-road conditions.
