Super Rare Garage Find 1964 1/4 D Code Convertible Mustang
The D-Code Mustang was a mid year 1965 model introduction of the much anticipated Mustang that were built at the Dearborn plant in response to other manufacturers release of high performance machines and Ford, as ever, was eager to hit the ground galloping (sorry, couldn't resist) with this Pony. As the Ford factory pushed these early intro Mustangs to market there are a few very unique characteristics to these Mustangs that would become signatures of the earliest Mustangs built through the Spring of 1964. A host of special identifiers include the unrefined edge of the hood extensions. Each 64 1/2 Mustang had beveled headlight extensions and more importantly this is unique to these early intros. Major under the hood features are the vented core supports to help cool the battery, (Due to having a generator instead of alternator ) oil spout on distributor to oil gear, horn mounted behind and low on the frame rails. Now this one? It is boasting the 289 4V engine known as a D-code and Automatic transmission. This car came with factory four barrel carburetor that still has the "C4af" tag on it. multiple "C4" tags and stampings indicating the car was built early spring of 1964. all cars are titled 1965 but the 64 1/2 are in a class by themselves due to options and differences in certain items.. A quick peek under the hood reveals all of these tell tale attributes and more! But the differences were not only under the hood. In fact, the the interior is peppered with the right cues to let you know you found the holy grail of the first gen Mustangs. The fan switch has an "Off" selection, generator charge light on dash and an "a" on the air vent! This one also features a Rally pack! we also have the factory steel wheels and spinner wheel covers that are date coded c4af.
This an important piece of American car history, with less than a year in production you can be assured this is the right one if you want a rare storied piece of Americana history. Call for any questions, we love to talk about this particular ride!!! This one was barn kept for 25 years and is ready to get reborn into the original Dearborn legend it is.
