Sublimation is an excellent way to create vibrant, long-lasting designs on garments and hard surface blanks. In this beginner's guide, we’ll walk you through how to print sublimation transfers and apply them to polyester garments and polyester-coated hard surfaces like tumblers and drinkware.
Step 1: Printing Sublimation Transfers
To get started, you’ll need a sublimation printer, like the Sawgrass SG1000, which uses sublimation ink. Using Sawgrass Creative Studio, arrange your designs on an 11x17 paper to fit your project size. Once your design is set, print it using Sawgrass Print Manager. For best results, set your color mode to “Vivid.”
Step 2: Pressing Sublimation on Garments
For optimal transfer results, use a white, 100% polyester garment. While lower polyester counts (around 50%) or light colors can work, they may affect the vibrancy of your design. Pre-press the shirt to remove wrinkles, and use a lint roller to remove any debris that could interfere with the transfer.
Next, center the design on your garment using a ruler and secure it with thermo tape to prevent ghosting. Press the transfer at 385°F for 45 seconds with medium pressure. Once done, peel off the transfer, and you’re left with a design that’s permanently infused into the fabric!
Step 3: Pressing Sublimation on Hard Surface Blanks
For hard surface items like skinny can coolers, which have a polyester coating, the process is similar. After printing your design, secure it with thermo tape and wrap the blank in a shrink wrap sleeve. Use a convection oven set to 400°F for 6 minutes. When done, remove the transfer while the blank is still hot. The result is a detailed, vibrant print with perfect color transfer!
