The Gothic church of Santa Maria del Mar, also known as the "Sea Cathedral of Barcelona," is one of the must-see attractions in the Catalan capital.
Of course, if I, a seasoned Barcelona tour guide, were asked: which of Barcelona's churches do you find most unusual, I would answer without hesitation: the Sagrada Familia!
I would call this magnificent project by Antoni Gaudí the most unusual church not only in Barcelona, but on the entire planet Earth – and those who have visited our city and visited the Sagrada Familia will certainly agree.
The most unusual, grandiose, stunning, majestic – one could add a dozen more superlatives here, and all would be more than appropriate. Such is the Sagrada Familia, Gaudí's great and unfinished masterpiece, which, let's hope, will finally be completed within the next twenty years.
But if the question were posed a little differently: which of Barcelona's old churches deserves your attention most and is your personal favorite? I'd immediately say: Santa Maria del Mar.
