Empuriabrava is a resort located, as you can easily guess from the name, on the Costa Brava coast in Catalonia and is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful and fashionable places for a seaside holiday not only in Spain, but, perhaps, in all of Europe.

"Located", frankly speaking, is convenient: 20 km to the border with France, 16 km to Figueres, where the famous Salvador Dali Theatre-Museum is located, 150 km to Barcelona, which takes exactly one and a half hours by motorway...

"Well, a resort and a resort, you say. - What's so unusual about it?" But don't rush to conclusions: the unusualness of Empuriabrava is that it is a real "town on canals", and the length of these canals is no more and no less than 37 km! It is for this reason that Empuriabrava is called the Catalan, or Spanish Venice.

Just imagine a city in which there is practically not a single high-rise building - only solid elegant villas in the Mediterranean style, literally radiating fluids of prosperity and well-being. On one side of each villa there is a regular road, but on the other side there is something more interesting: a sea road or a canal.

And on one side, thus, you have a land iron horse parked, and on the other - some powerful boat, on which it is so great to cut through the clean Mediterranean waves in a cheerful company of friends - or go out to sea fishing. So, waking up in Empuriabrava, you still have to rack your brains: which way - by land or by sea, to get out into the world today.

However, you can not rack your brains with such a dilemma, but just put your feet in flip-flops and go to the wonderful beach, the length of which in Empuriabrava is 1.5 km, and after water procedures, have a glorious dinner in one of the restaurants with mainly seafood, but if necessary, and meat cuisine, of which there is no shortage in Empuriabrava.

In the same way, Empuriabrava has no shortage of shops and shopping centers - let's not forget, it is a seaside resort with all that "entails"...

True, the resort, given the specifics of the vacationing public, is specific - you can hardly find a few hotels in the entire city. Most, as we have already said, prefer to rent villas on the canals, and many have long owned villas as owners. It is for them that in April Empuriabrava annually holds an exhibition and sale of yachts and boats of various types, sizes and price categories.

This, by the way, is one of the peculiarities of Empuriabrava - here they prefer to sell not cars, but boats - and the cost of some of them is calculated in astronomical amounts.

Looking at all this Mediterranean beauty and undisguised luxury, it is hard to believe that half a century ago there was no Empuriabrava - the Spanish Venice - and in its place there was a deserted coastal lowland, ideal for growing rice - which, in fact, is what local farmers did.

However, the Catalans have always been distinguished by their entrepreneurial spirit. In the 60s of the last century, such a phenomenon as mass tourism arose and began to quickly gain momentum in the world - and Spain did not want to remain on the sidelines. Three businessmen: the Marquis of Sant Mori, Miguel Arpa and Fernando Vilallonga became the first initiators of the urbanization of this territory in 1964. At first, their project of the "Spanish Venice" met with fierce resistance from local farmers, but the authorities quickly realized that the business idea could be successful - and gave the "green light" to the entrepreneurs' idea....
