The BOSS DR-110 analog cymbal sound generator circuit is composed of four main parts: noise sources, filter, envelope generators and VCAs. The white noise circuit is built around a shift register and some XOR gates. It is usually called a digital noise generator. I substituted it with the Hoshuyama ultra simple noise generator. The metallic noise circuit is made with four square wave oscillators built around a 4069 CMOS inverter. In this video I am using an Arduino Nano to generate the four square waves. It is basically the BlinkWithoutDelay Arduino example. The complete code is in the comment section. The white and metallic noise signals are mixed and sent to two filters. Center frequency is about 7 KHz for the top filter and around 3.5 KHz for the bottom filter. The two filtered noise signals finally go to the envelope generators and VCAs circuits. The top filter signal goes to VCA Q7, driven by a short envelope created with R38 and C17. This simulates the the stick hitting the cymbal and subsequent high hiss noise. The bottom filter signal goes to VCA Q9, driven by a long envelope created with R45 and C21. This lower frequency noise adds some coloration to the decay portion of the cymbal sound.
