1 Samuel 25:1-44
And Samuel died, and all Israel gathered together, and they mourned him, and buried him in his house in Ramah. And David arose and went down to the wilderness of Paran.
Now there was a man in Maon, whose possessions were in Carmel; and the man was very wealthy, and he had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats; and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel.
Now the name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail; and the woman was of good understanding and beautiful; but the man was harsh and evil in his deeds, and he was of the house of Caleb.
And David heard in the wilderness that Nabal was shearing his sheep.
So David sent ten young men, and said to them, “Go up to Carmel, and when you come to Nabal, ask him in my name how he is.
And thus you shall say to that prosperous man: ‘Peace be to you, and peace to your house, and peace to all that you have!’
Now therefore, I have heard that you have shearers. Now, the shepherds whom you have were with us; we did them no harm, nor did they lack anything all the days that they were in Carmel.
Ask your young men, and they will tell you. Let these young men find favor in your eyes, for we have come at a good time. Give therefore to your servants and to David your son whatever you find at hand.”
So David’s young men came and spoke all these words to Nabal in David’s name, and they held their peace.
And Nabal answered David's servants, and said, “Who is David? And who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants today who run away from their masters.
Should I then take my bread and my water and the meat of my cattle that I have slaughtered for my shearers, and give it to men whom I do not know where they come from?”
Then David's young men set out and returned, and came and told him everything according to all these words.
So David said to his men, “Each of you gird on your sword.” And each man girded on his sword, and David also girded on his; and about four hundred men went up after David, and two hundred stayed with the baggage.
But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife, saying, “Behold, David sent messengers from the wilderness to greet our master; but he mistreated them.”
However, those men have been very good to us, and we have never been harmed by them, nor have we lacked anything all the days we were with them in the field.
They were a wall around us, both day and night, all the days we were with them tending the sheep.
Consider now, and see what you must do, for evil is determined against our master and against all his household, and he is a wicked man, and no one can speak to him.
Then Abigail hurried and took two hundred loaves of bread, two skins of wine, five dressed sheep, five measures of roasted grain, one hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of pressed figs, and loaded them on donkeys.
And she said to her servants, “Go on ahead of me; I will follow you closely.” But she did not tell her husband Nabal.
And it came to pass, as she rode upon her ass, that she came down by the covert of the mountain; and, behold, David and his men came to meet her; and she met them.
And David said, “Surely in vain have I kept all that this man has in the wilderness; and nothing is missing of all that he has; and he has repaid me evil for good.
So may God do to the enemies of David, and more also, if I leave by morning of all that he has, even one little boy.”
When Abigail saw David, she hurried and dismounted from her ass, and fell on her face before David, and bowed herself to the ground.
And she fell at his feet, and said, “Oh, my lord, let the blame be on me alone; please let your servant speak in your ears, and hear the words of your servant.”
My lord, do not let this wicked man, Nabal, make an impression on your heart, for he is just as his name is. Nabal is his name, and folly is with him. I, your servant, did not see the young men of my lord whom you sent.
Now therefore, my lord, as the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, since the Lord has kept you from coming to bloodshed and from saving yourself with your own hand, may your enemies and those who seek evil against my lord be like Nabal.
And now this is the present that your servant has brought to my lord; let it be given to the young men who follow my lord.
Please forgive your servant this transgression, for the Lord will surely establish a lasting dynasty for my master, because my master fights the Lord’s battles, and no wrongdoing has been found in you all your days.
And if anyone rises up to pursue you and seek your life, the life of my master will be bound in the bundle of the living with the Lord your God; but the lives of your enemies he will hurl away, as...
