Children and Youth in Care Day message from Ontario Ombudsman Paul Dubé:
Each year in Ontario, on May 14th, we celebrate Children and Youth in Care Day. The purpose of Children and Youth in Care Day is to recognize the strength, resilience and contributions of all current and former young people, in the child welfare system. From my viewpoint, I am able to witness these qualities each and every day from the young people who contact my office.
As Ombudsman, it's my job to ensure that young people and care are treated fairly, and services for them are working the way they're supposed to. To achieve this, it's important that all young people are seen, listened to, and that their rights are respected, and upheld by all service providers, and the government. Now, this all starts with the difficult, but necessary step that young people take, to put themselves out there to share their feelings, or concerns, with someone they've never met.
in order to change things; to improve things. This requires nothing less than true courage and spirit. On Children and Youth in Care Day, I encourage the people of Ontario, to share in my admiration and respect of these young people, and what they bring to our communities, and society. It should also serve as an important reminder of the need to eradicate any stigma associated with the child welfare system, and instead focus on the incredible things these current and former young people do and achieve
each and every day. My office's Children and Youth Unit is here to listen to what young people in care have to say, to respect who they are and to help answer questions and find solutions.
