Known only to a few high-ranking government officials and hidden under layers and layers of secrecy and confidentiality, Directorate 9 is the special branch of the Russian secret services for "destabilization operations on foreign soil", that is, sabotage, assassinations and other unspeakable black ops in the name of the country's interests. Its members are hand-selected from the various branches of the army and in a supposedly abandoned compound in the Ural Mountains they undergo three months of one of the toughest training in the world. The candidates are already experts in the use of firearms, they are trained in making explosives, killing with blades and making poisons. Already experts in close combat, they are taught to fight fast, dirty and deadly.
The last promotion has been brutal, as they all are. Of the more than 120 initial candidates, only 14 have reached the final phase. Many have retired, many others have ended up in hospital after suffering an accident and some have even died in one of the intense and dangerous tests. There is not going to be a graduation party for those who have completed the three months, the instructor has ordered them to make groups of two for a final test, a 1vs1 fight where they will put into practice everything they have learned.
Dasha, the young bear from the ground army, has ended up irremediably paired with Valery, the white wolf. The spetsnaz has been the golden boy of training, beating his teammates in all physical and skill tests. On her part, Dasha has not shown any quality that stood out from the other candidates except her superhuman endurance. No matter how much fatigue or pain her body suffers, she is able to finish the job where most have already given up. During the last few months a friendly rivalry has emerged between the two, even a few times they have let off the steam in the locker room of the complex making love as they fight, as a test of durability.
The shock is generalized when, with all the students prepared and gathered for the test, the instructor informs them that the test would indeed be a final fight, as it will be to the death. The normally disciplined Dasha can't help but exclaim:
-But we're just training!
-You are not training to fight, you are training to obey.
For this is the final test of Directorate 9 to its future members, a demonstration of blind obedience, a proof that they would be capable of anything, of killing anyone, if ordered to do so.
Without further words being said, the first fighters take up positions and, after a moment of hesitation, rush at each other. Initial reserves are left behind when instinct and training take over, and within minutes the first winner and the first corpse emerge. The second follows immediately. And the third. Dasha is a warrior used to the battlefield, but despite all the horrors that she has seen she cannot help but shudder at the spectacle of comrades with whom she has so far shared pain and laughter killing each other.
From the corner of her eye she observes Valery, her potential murderer or victim, but the face of the wolf, always the professional, is a concrete wall that does not express any sentiment. She knows that just as she does he is evaluating his rival and calculating his chances. But, unlike Dasha, the numbers play in his favor. Dasha has never been able to defeat him in a melee fight. At most a couple of times the fight ended in a draw, with both contenders being too exhausted to continue. But just as the instructor insensibly said, this was a game. Dasha knows that a person's performance is not the same on the battlefield as it is in a controlled environment. She has seen alpha males forgetting all about their training in coming face to face with death, as she has seen wimps behaving like heroes. And Dasha intends to face death tooth and nail, just as she has done her entire life. If they want her to be a killing machine, a killing machine she will be.
