Concept 1: Addition of Integers
When we add two integers with the same sign, we add their absolute values and keep the common sign. For example:
(+5) + (+3) = +8
(-4) + (-2) = -6
When we add two integers with different signs, we subtract their absolute values and keep the sign of the integer with the greater absolute value. For example:
(+5) + (-3) = +2
(-4) + (+2) = -2
Concept 2: Subtraction of Integers
Subtraction of integers can be thought of as adding the opposite. For example, to subtract a number, we add its opposite.
(+7) - (+3) is the same as (+7) + (-3) = +4
(-6) - (-2) is the same as (-6) + (+2) = -4
Now, let's practice some problems:
Problem 1: Simplify the following expressions:
a) (+6) + (+2)
b) (-9) + (+4)
c) (-7) + (-3)
d) (+10) + (-8)
e) (+5) - (+3)
f) (-10) - (+2)
g) (+4) - (-6)
h) (-5) - (-1)
Problem 2: Evaluate the following expressions:
a) (+12) + (-8) - (+3)
b) (-5) - (-2) - (-3)
c) (+10) - (-5) + (-7)
d) (-8) + (-4) - (-2) + (+6)
