Watch Mama Panda Caring for Her Cubs
A female giant panda who recently gave birth to twin cubs is adapting well to the stress of motherhood and taking good care of her babies.
The mother panda, who lives in the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Center, is eating more than usual so as to produce enough milk for her babies.
The mother cares for one cub at a time. She feeds the cubs several times a day and stroke their bellies to help them digest. She also keeps their fur clean by frequently licking them.
To ensure both babies get a chance to feed, keepers in the center have to distract the mother's attention every now and then by offering her honey, allowing them to switch the cubs and let them to be fed in turn.
Six panda mothers in the center have delivered nine babies, including three sets of twins, this year. The mother pandas have to feed the babies for three months after the delivery.
