The Appalachian Brotherhood of Steel
Heroism is often romanticized as a trait of a flawless individual who stands as a symbol of pure good. However, in the world of Fallout - good and bad get more blurry the further you get away from October 23rd 2077 - the literal end of the modern world. True heroism is more complex, encompassing not just the triumphs but also the flaws, struggles, and difficult decisions that define you. The Appalachian Brotherhood of Steel, a faction within the base game of Fallout 76, not the DLC content led by Paladin Ramani and Knight Shin, exemplifies this imperfect heroism. Transformation from mere army survivors to a community-oriented military group into an isolated and insular faction. History tells us heroes falter, well-intentioned heroes falter, lose their way, and face the consequences of their choices. Fallout 76, for all of its flaws, has some of the best storytelling in the entire series - and I think that The Brotherhood of Steel may just be the best story in Fallout’s history.
