Building College & Career Knowledge and Skills
Learning and exploring key self and college knowledge is essential for students to build a set of skills and abilities for informed, lifelong college and career decisions. As school counselors and program directors, this is a critical aspect of what we do every day. However, a recent study conducted by our panelists (Dr. Timothy Poynton and Dr. Richard Lapan) showed that when asked basic college admissions questions on college culture and policies, the college choice and application process, and financial aid, it was found that graduating seniors, on average, only could answer 43% of the questions correctly, with first-generation students only scoring 38.6% correct. This data lends to one of the reasons why 55% of high school students who start in college either do not graduate within 4 years or drop out of college.
