The Azores Islands are undoubtedly one of Portugal's greatest beauties. With their lush green expanses, interrupted only by the ocean, they delight the eyes of any nature lover, while their small towns transport the mind to a distant past that seems far from our own time.
Among the nine islands that make up the archipelago, in this video we'll explore the main one: São Miguel. This island is home to the main airport and, if necessary, from which you can travel to the other smaller islands. As always, below you'll find all the useful information to plan your trip independently. Enjoy your trip and enjoy!

USEFUL INFORMATION

FLIGHTS

São Miguel is the main island of the archipelago, but it's not the only one with an airport. Other islands (such as Pico and Terceira) also have airports with direct flights from Lisbon. For smaller islands, you'll need to stop elsewhere and then take ferries. During the winter season, due to fewer tourists, travel options between islands may be limited and more expensive. There do not currently appear to be any direct flights from Italy.

CLIMATE and CLOTHING

As you'll have seen from the video, the island is subject to rainfall, often scattered and unpredictable. In fact, you may find yourself having to plan your activities and itinerary on the island day by day based on the weather. Always make sure you have appropriate clothing for every situation: shoes with waterproof soles and a hooded jacket/raincoat especially. Temperatures are generally mild, even in winter.

RENTAL CAR

As I say in all my videos, there's no better way to visit an island than to rent a car and explore it freely. When it comes to rental companies, there's always the issue of credit cards. Many companies require it, and even if not explicitly requested at the time of booking, it may be necessary when picking up the vehicle, resulting in non-owners being denied access to the car.
If you don't have a credit card, don't worry: there are always companies with which you aren't required to have one. For example, I rented with way2azores (https://www.way2azores-rent.pt/en), which allowed me to rent the car using only a debit card.

Unlike in Madeira, where I didn't have a choice about whether or not to purchase insurance that covered the deductible in the event of an accident (there it was mandatory and included in the price, which was clearly higher), with way2azores you can choose whether or not to purchase the policy. The choice is yours; do as you feel best.

For those who choose airport pickup, the company offers customers a free shuttle service that will take you from the airport to the nearby parking lot (and back when you return your car).
