This is one grinding machine where it is not possible to use wheel guards much of the time but often a guard can be used on the cup wheels that are one of the most likely to burst if bumped hard or has hidden damage. The safest wheel considered by many for grinding on the side face is the shallow dish type wheel. It is important to always ring test wheels and stay out of the burst zone also make sure there is a paper "blotter" on both sides of the wheel for added protection from the wheel bursting.
