It is truly an honour to have the opportunity to speak with 102-year-old veteran Jim Brooks about his memories of serving during the 2nd World War. His experiences in Darwin, Papua New Guinea, and Borneo provide us with valuable insights into the challenges and sacrifices faced by Australian servicemen during this time.

The Borneo campaign, as the final major Australian operations of the war in the Pacific, holds significant historical importance. Beginning on May 1, 1945, and continuing through to August, the campaign consisted of three distinct operations: Balikpapan, Brunei Bay, and Tarakan. These operations aimed to liberate the region from Japanese occupation.

During the campaign, Australian forces encountered intense fighting, and the toll on the troops was substantial. With Australian casualties numbering over 2000 for the entire campaign, the sacrifices made by those who served cannot be understated.

By speaking with Jim Brooks, we have the privilege of gaining firsthand accounts of the conditions, challenges, and triumphs experienced by the servicemen who fought during this critical period. His memories provide a personal perspective that helps us understand the courage and resilience displayed by the men and women who served in defence of their country.

It is crucial to honour and preserve the memories of veterans like Jim Brooks, as their stories contribute to our understanding of history and remind us of the sacrifices made for the freedoms we enjoy today. Their experiences serve as a testament to the bravery and dedication of those who served during the 2nd World War.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."
