Larval Therapy application: using bagged larvae for wound debridement
Larval Therapy, also known as 'Maggot Therapy' or 'Biosurgery', involves the use of larvae of the greenbottle fly, which are introduced onto a wound (usually in a bag) to remove necrotic, sloughy and/or infected tissue.
This video highlights the application of larvae in a bagged format, where the larvae, along with either one or multiple foam spacers, are sealed within a finely woven polyester net pouch. These dressings come in varying sizes and are applied according to the nature and size of the wound being treated. The larvae remain sealed within the dressing throughout the treatment making the application and removal of the larvae significantly easier for clinicians.
