Semyon Ivanovich Dezhnev (February 25 (March 7), 1605 — 1673) — Russian traveler, explorer, navigator, researcher of Northern and Eastern Siberia and North America, Yakut ataman, fur trader.
Semyon Dezhnev — Russian explorer, researcher of Siberia and the Far East was born in the village of Yesipovskaya of the Soyalsky stan of the Volokopinezhskaya volost around 1605. From here he went to Veliky Ustyug, where he enlisted in the Cossacks and set off to distant shores.
In 1648, a koch under his command rounded the Chukchi Peninsula and was the first to pass between Eurasia and North America. The explorers passed by Cape Bolshoy Kamenny Nos, which later received the name of its discoverer Semyon Dezhnev.
Unfortunately, documents confirming the discovery of the strait were not found immediately. Therefore, the laurels of the pioneer went to Vitus Bering, who passed here 80 years later than Dezhnev.
In the history of the Arctic exploration, Semyon Dezhnev from Pinega has an honorable place. His name is in the first row of the glorious names of polar seafarers of the 16th - 17th centuries!
He died in 1673 in Moscow.
