2024 HONDA CIVIC HATCHBACK - Visual WALKAROUND, exterior & interior
The 2024 Honda Civic enters its second year of the 11th generation with minimal changes after last year's redesign. Honda's stalwart compact car continues to impress with its blend of style, efficiency, performance and value.
For 2024, Honda adds a Civic Hybrid model, available in sedan and hatchback body styles. It uses a four-cylinder gas engine paired with two electric motors for a total system output of approximately 200 horsepower. Honda says the hybrid will offer even better fuel economy than the regular Civic, which is EPA rated up to 42 mpg highway.
Outside, the Civic has an athletic, coupe-like silhouette with a fastback roofline. Sporty details like available 18-inch wheels and dual exhaust tips add flair. Inside, the Civic provides excellent passenger room and modern tech like a standard 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and partial digital gauges. Higher trim levels get an excellent 9-inch touchscreen and 10-inch all-digital instrument panel.
The base Civic LX is motivated by a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 158 horsepower. More powerful Civics use a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder making 180 hp. A Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is standard on the sedan while the hatchback offers a 6-speed manual option. Acceleration is adequate if not exciting, with a 0-60 mph time of around 7.5 seconds. Opt for the upcoming Civic Si or Type R for real performance.
Where the Civic excels is around corners, where it feels nimble and eager. The steering and suspension deliver sporty, confident handling without being overly stiff. Ride quality is compliant for everyday commuting. The Civic manages to strike a fantastic balance between comfort and athleticism.
Inside, the Civic provides excellent space for four adults or five in a pinch. Seating is comfortable and visibility is good all around. The trunk can handle a week's worth of luggage. Interior materials and assembly quality give an upscale vibe, especially on nicer Touring and Sport Touring models.
The Civic impresses on the tech front by making the 7-inch touchscreen standard. It has crisp graphics and snappy response along with standard Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. The available 9-inch screen is better yet with wireless smartphone integration. Other options include an excellent 10-speaker Bose audio system, wireless phone charging, WiFi hotspot, and a color head-up display.
On the safety front, every Civic comes standard with Honda Sensing that includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. Blind spot monitoring is optional. So far, the 2022 Civic has earned top "Good" crash test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA.
Base pricing for the 2024 Civic starts at $25,045 for the sedan and $26,045 for the hatchback. Well-equipped EX models go for around $28,000. The new Civic Hybrid will start above $30,000 when it arrives later this year. That's very competitive pricing in the compact segment and helps explain why the Civic continues to be among America's top selling cars.
After 11 generations, the Honda Civic has staying power for good reason. It manages to be fun to drive, thrifty at the pump, comfortable for passengers, and affordable to own. The 2024 Civic makes minimal changes while carrying over the goodness of last year's redesign. For shoppers wanting style, efficiency and driving enjoyment in an affordable package, the Civic remains a compelling choice.
