Who the fuck shoots a full music video in the CBGB bathroom? We did.
By 1998, everything felt like it was going to shit. Our band, New York, and the whole idea of rock ‘n’ roll was circling the drain. So we leaned in. And thought we’d have some fun. After all, if you’re gonna dance on a grave, you might as well do it somewhere familiar. And that was the bathroom at CBGB.
That room had history pissed and puked into the tiles. Ramones, Heartbreakers, Dead Boys—people we idolized—had all passed through, leaving behind something. It wasn’t precious. It wasn’t sacred. It was real.
CBGB itself was still technically alive, but the energy had already drifted. Most nights, the center of gravity had shifted up toward St. Marks and places like The Continental. Still, CBs had a pull. If Louise called, you showed up. No questions.
We had the right people around us, too. Lou “Mr. Popular” Paris had worked at the CBGB Record Canteen. So had director Curtis Cates—The Hillbilly Pecker—who had the eye to make something out of fluorescent misery. He didn’t clean it up. He didn’t try to make it pretty. He just pointed the camera and let the action Splat. Rat and Cowboy had the suits, the shoes, and the guitars.Ian Hunter said rock ‘n’ roll is a loser’s game. He was right, of course. But standing in that bathroom at 3 a.m., under that unforgiving light, it didn’t feel like losing. It was just rock ‘n’ roll.
Shot at 315 Bowery, before the end, before the merch racks, and the museums.
