Byzantine Saints: Hieromartyr Anthimus, Bishop of Nicomedia & Those with Him (3 September)
In this video, we honor the memory of the Holy Hieromartyr Anthimus, Bishop of Nicomedia, and the countless Christians who suffered martyrdom during the brutal persecutions of Emperor Diocletian and Maximian.
Following a fire at the imperial court of Nicomedia, Christians were falsely accused and subjected to horrific tortures. On the Feast of the Nativity of Christ, as many as 20,000 Christians were burned alive in the church of Nicomedia. Despite the cruelty, the faithful stood firm in Christ, embracing martyrdom with courage.
Among the martyrs were Dorotheus, Mardonius, Gorgonius, Peter, Zeno, and the Virgin-Martyr Domna. Bishop Anthimus himself was betrayed, arrested, and brought before Emperor Maximian. He boldly confessed Christ, endured fierce tortures, and was finally beheaded by the sword, receiving the crown of martyrdom.
This account reminds us of the unwavering faith of the early Church, who chose eternal life in Christ over the fleeting comforts of this world.
✝️ May the prayers of the Holy Martyrs strengthen us in our own walk of faith.
