Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde J003034 - 18k solid white gold - 43mm automatic from ca 2002
Hello and welcome! This is a watch so cool it deserves its own post. It’s a Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde ref J003034 from ca 2002. A stunning 43mm large beauty in 18k solid white gold, with display caseback and automatic movement. It has a whole lot going for it.
Anyway, back to this watch, and some history on JD; Pierre Jaquet-Droz was a brilliant manufacturer of watches, clocks, and automatons (mechanically driven characters), like a bird hatching from an egg etc. These were so intricate and famous, that their inventor almost got burned at the stake for alleged witchcraft. JD’s creations were so legendary, that 200 years after his death his name was revived in 1993. In 1995 they began recreating JD’s automatons, and in 2000 the company got bought by Swatch Group. Under its lead, the Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde was launched in 2002.
This particular watch is a low serial number, so likely a first year example from 2002. The dial is grey with white subdials, with white gold inner bezel, and beautiful blued hands. The dial is pristine, looks amazing, and pops incredibly beautifully with the blued hands and blued screws. The 18k solid white gold case is in excellent condition, looks near mint. The watch is a ref J003034, powered by an automatic cal 2663.4 from ca 2002. It works perfectly and keeps excellent time. Service history unknown; if desired I can get it serviced before shipping out.
This beauty has very nice wrist presence, measuring 43mm diameter without crown, and 51mm from lug to lug. It comes on its original black Jaquet Droz crocodile leather strap & original 18k solid white gold JD buckle. The strap has been used, and still in great condition, can be used for many more years.
*in the video I said JD was a French watchmaker, but he was Swiss; was just in my head with the French name
