If you've had an abusive or alcoholic parent that drank a certain type of beer, then you might connect anyone who drinks that type of beer as being an abusive alcoholic. Why? Because the salience effect, this is where your brain focuses on unique or specific factors of a situation, and you give them way too much credit for causing this situation.

And by the way, what you focus on usually has to do with past experiences. This can give you some blind spots and cause you to make some shitty decisions. So what's the antidote? People! If you are aware of this effect and surround yourself with people who have varied or diverse experiences, and you are open to their perspectives, you can overcome this effect.

Can you think of a time when other people have helped you overcome the salience effect? Leave me a comment and let me know.
