“A View from a Hill” is a short ghost story by British author M.R. James. It was first published in the literary journal London Mercury in May 1925 and later included in the anthology "A Warning to the Curious and Other Ghost Stories".
The plot revolves around an antiquary named Fanshawe, who visits the country home of his wealthy friend, Squire Henry Richards. Fanshawe, eager to explore the area, borrows a pair of binoculars made by a man named Baxter, an amateur archaeologist who died under mysterious circumstances. Through these binoculars, Fanshawe sees objects that no longer exist but also begins to have unsettling experiences.
The story combines elements of history, legend, and the supernatural, creating an eerie atmosphere that lingers long after listening.
