Online trading is a practice that allows you to invest in financial markets online, using your computer or smartphone. In addition to an internet-connected device, you also need a trading account, opened through a broker who provides the trading platform and the instruments you wish to trade.
The online trading platform is the tool that allows you to place orders, which can be set using the order window, which can be accessed from the platform itself. In the order window, you can set order parameters, such as investment amount, leverage, stop loss, take profit, trailing stop, and any conditional orders.
In the video, we show practical examples of online trading on Amazon shares, cryptocurrencies, and Forex crosses. Online trading allows you to trade on multiple financial markets.
Regarding stocks, in the video tutorial, we also explain the differences between stocks and CFDs, a point that many novice traders find confusing. In short, with CFDs, you don't buy a stock but rather trade (up or down) on its value.
As we see in the video, on eToro you can do both: buy real stocks and trade CFDs.
CFDs have some unique features: the ability to trade up and down, leverage, the spread (paid when opening a position), and overnight fees (paid daily for rolling over to the next trading day, including three on weekends).
To switch from buying stocks to online CFD trading, you can apply leverage or open a short position. Many platforms, however, only offer CFDs (e.g., Plus500, Capital.com, Capex, IQ Option, etc.).
Online trading platforms are very similar, except in a few cases. However, they all share some important features, such as the list of tradable assets, the real-time asset price chart, the account status, and the order window.
The order window contains the most important online trading orders, such as market orders (i.e., instant orders at the market price), stop-loss orders (to automatically close the position and lock in losses), take-profit orders (to automatically close the position and capture profits), and trailing stops (to automatically optimize the stop-loss in the event of a favorable market).
