The idea for the Stirling Cycle Engine principal was conceived in the early 1700s. However, it was improved in 1816 by Rev. Robert Stirling, a Scottish minister. Stirling Cycle engines remained a major source of power until the early 1900s when they were replaced with electric motors and gasoline engines.
Although this model engine was designed with Esbit dry fuel in mind, any form of heat may be used as long as it is sufficient. A Stirling can directly use concentrated solar energy, kerosene, coal, straw, sawdust, cardboard or any other combustible substance imaginable.
