I Will- The Beatles (Guitar Cover)
I Will was written by Paul McCartney in Rishikesh, India. It's a short but sweet acoustic love song in the key of F. It was released on the White Album in 1968
The song was recorded at EMI (Abbey Road) on September 16th 1968. The basic track featured Ringo on cymbals/bongos, John on skulls (also known as temple blocks- a percussion instrument hit with sticks), and Paul on acoustic guitar. George Harrison did not attend these sessions
The following day, Paul overdubbed double-tracked lead acoustic guitar. He most likely used his Martin D-28 guitar for all three guitar parts. But he did have his Epiphone Texan at the time, too
Paul didn't use a pick for the rhythm guitar, a technique he used for many songs throughout his career. He did use a pick for the two lead acoustic guitars
I confirmed that he used a capo ONLY for the overdubbed lead guitars. The rhythm guitar uses open D minor and A minor chords, which are not possible with a capo in the key of F
At 1:25 the chords change from F to C sharp. The lead guitars play seemless pull-offs from F to Eb to Db (high e and b strings) that are only possible when playing a C shape with the capo on the 1st fret. I concluded the lead guitars must have had a capo
I'm using my 1969 Martin 00-18 vintage acoustic. It is actually pretty different from Paul's D-28. 00-18's are smaller and have mahogany back and sides. D-28's are dreadnoughts with rosewood back and sides
I scooped out some of the midrange from my rhythm guitar, to match the scoopier tone of Paul's D28. I did this in Pro Tools, using REQ plug-in
The rhythm guitar on the original song is very bright and bassy at the same time. There probably was not much EQ applied at EMI to this guitar. However, the lead guitars are very dark sounding, and most likely were equalized heavily. I put a low-pass filter on the lead guitars in REQ, which basically cuts off all the frequencies above 12khz
