Are you studying animals that live in cold? Have you wondered how penguins stay warm in freezing cold enviroments? How do they swim in icy water without a care in the world? The answer is blubber! Today we're going to ask: how does blubber keep penguins warm?
Using simple supplies that you probably have at home, we'll do an observation see how blubber works to keep artic animals warm and toasty. We'll experience cold water with bare hands and also with a "blubber glove" to see what a difference blubber makes.
We'll use this experiment as a launching point to talk briefly about what adaptations are and adaptations in the animal world.
If you want to make even more connections, read the book “Penguins Don't Wear Sweaters” and then do this experiment. If you’re feeling frisky, you can also do our penguin art project to go with it. Your animal loving kids will be engaged, having fun, and learning at the same time!
