'Güde HQ 400B' Lathe Restoration & Modification
Lathe Data:
Manufacturer: Guede
Model: HB 400 B
Year: 2004
Weight: 210kg
General Information:
Iam a hobby machinist, and this lathe isn't a high precision tool. But it helps me a lot for the things i do.
I bought this lathe 2 years ago from a Porsche engineer, who didnt work a lot with it, but treated it well. To me its the perfect lathe because of its size and the drill head.
FAQ to the restoration:
Q: Why didnt you calibrate the carriage and the tailstock?
A: I did.
Q: Why didnt you replace the bearings and belts?
A: The belts were replaced by myself around 1 year ago and still in a good condition. The Bearings may look old, but since the lathe wasnt used pretty often in his service life, the bearings clearences were still pretty well. So I decided 'just' to clean them.
Q: Why didnt you (fully) disassemble the tower?
A: To be honest, I did. But i did offcam, because there was trouble with the fit of the spindles main bearing (was losen). So I fully disassembled it and reassembled it with correct torques.
Q: Wasn't the paint dry or why could I see so many blue spots after painting?
A: The paint needs around 3 weeks to dry completely. I reassembled after around 1 week, so here and there was some paint cracked off because of reassembly. But: I gave it a whole touch up job after it was fully reassembled.
Q: Why is the lathe chuck turning when the drill head is working? It didnt do that before!
A: Youre right! Now it does, and thats the way its supposed to be.
Q: Why did you do so much work off cam?
A: You really dont want to know how much work this was, so...sometimes I just needed to turn the camera off ;-)
