Crista y George Westfield (Marg Helgenberger y Christopher Reeve) forman un perfecto y feliz matrimonio después de un año de casados. Ella tiene una preciosa hija, Jennie, de su matrimonio anterior, pero ha alcanzado el equilibrio con su nuevo marido. Un día la niña aparece ahogada en el estanque y la tragedia sobrecoge al matrimonio. Al cabo de un tiempo la hija regresa del más allá para comunicarse con su madre y hacerle sorprendentes revelaciones. Ante la incredulidad de su marido, buscará ayuda en una excéntrica doctora (Fionnula Flanagan), y juntas, descubrirán un terrible secreto.
