The city of Pripyat was empty one day after the 4th unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded on April 26, 1986.
Today, the entire territory is surrounded by a fence, the entrance through a single checkpoint is vigilantly guarded. Spontaneous forays into the zone gave way to orderly tourism under the supervision of the Ministry of Emergencies.
